Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is a historic mansion with gardens on the Ashley River in Charleston County, South Carolina, near 3550 Ashley River Road west of Ashley. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest plantations in the South.
Magnolia was once a rice plantation, with massive earthworks such as dams and dikes built in fields along the river to irrigate rice-growing land. The masterpieces were created by enslaved Africans from rice-growing regions.
Magnolia Plantation is one of Charleston's most popular outdoor attractions. With winding walkways through gardens bursting with hundreds of blossoms, guided tours explaining the plantation's fascinating history, and a plethora of wildlife, I believe a visit to the plantation warrants at least two days.
