Charleston Harbor is an Atlantic Ocean entrance located near Charleston, South Carolina. The Ashley and Cooper rivers meet at 32°49′7.10′′N 79°55′40.41′′W to form the inlet. The entry is protected by the islands of Morris and Sullivan. The Intracoastal Waterway runs across Charleston Harbor.
The Union Army force that was part of the attack did not take part in the combat. The ships attacked the Confederate defenses around the entrance to Charleston Harbor under the leadership of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont.
There is, in fact, a sandy region near the Harbor. Swimming in the Charleston Harbor is prohibited from the hotel's docks due to the fact that it is still an operating port.
The State Ports Authority operates five public terminals in the Charleston harbor, which is critical to South Carolina's economy. It's one of the country's most productive ports, and shipping is still one of the state's most important sectors.
