Dewees Island is a 1.875-square-mile barrier island located 11 miles north of Charleston. Early maps indicate Spence's Inlet between it and the Isle of Palms, but it is now known as Dewees Inlet. Only residential properties and a wildlife preserve are on the island, which is completely private.
As a result, there are restrictions controlling human influence on the island, and Dewees is a private island that is only accessible to owners, their guests, persons renting one of the numerous residences there, or anyone interested in acquiring property.
Indians, Revolutionary War soldiers, and Civil War blockades have all lived on the island over the years. It has a submarine tower from World War II. Dewees Island residents during the 19th century were represented primarily as oystermen and farmers in census records. In the 19th century rice planters began farming on Dewees.
Cars are not permitted on this private island, which can only be reached by private ferry or boat. The boat departs from the Isle of Palms Marina and travels through the Intracoastal Waterway in a peaceful, short, and lovely journey.
