Dewees Island is a 1.875-square-mile barrier island located 11 miles north of Charleston. Early maps indicate Spence's Inlet between it and the Isle of Palms, but it is now known as Dewees Inlet. Only residential properties and a wildlife preserve are on the island, which is completely private.
