Fort Sumter is a sea fort built on a man-made island to defend Charleston, South Carolina, against naval attack. Its origins can be traced back to the British invasion of Washington by water during the War of 1812. When the Battle of Fort Sumter began the American Civil War in 1861, it was still unfinished.

Fort Sumter is an island stronghold in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, that is best known for being the scene of the Civil War's first shots (1861-65).  In February 1865, Sherman captured Charleston.


What year was Fort Sumter designated as a national monument?

In 1948, the National Park Service designated Fort Sumter as a national monument. The Historic Sites Act of 1935 was used to add Fort Moultrie to the park in 1960.
