H. L. Hunley, also known as Hunley, CSS H. L. Hunley, or CSS Hunley, was a Confederate States of America submarine that served during the American Civil War. Hunley highlighted both the benefits and risks of submarine warfare.
The Hunley (also known as the "fish boat," "fish torpedo boat," or "porpoise") sank during a test run on August 29, 1863, killing five members of her crew.
Crew Bodies: Archaeologists excavating the Hunley following its discovery in 2000 discovered that the crewmembers' remains were mostly recovered at their stations, with no signs of fear or desperate attempts to get away from the submarine.
The crew of the Hunley was given the calm sea they had been waiting for on a beautiful night in February 1864, and they launched on their bold attack. The USS Housatonic, one of the Union's most powerful and newest sloops-of-war, was the target.
